Acute corneal hydrops of presumed traumatic origin: An uncontrolled case series (three horses)

This case series describes acute corneal hydrops in three young horses. Due to similarities the clinical appearance and progression of disease with that which is reported humans cats hydrops, traumatic Descemet’s membrane rupture was suspected be underlying aetiology these equine cases. The horses presented severe oedema intrastromal bullae formation anterior bulging contour. Focal posterior changes were also seen two Mild uveitis present. Other causes (e.g. glaucoma) ruled out based on presentation examination. Treatment approaches medical included various combinations prophylactic topical antimicrobial therapy secondary ulceration, anti-inflammatory for uveitis, targeted hypertonic saline cross-linking, placement a temporary partial tarsorrhaphy tamponade. outcome excellent all cases, rapid resolution ocular changes. Acute presumed origin should considered cases presenting oedema. However, further studies are warranted better characterise try confirm aetiology.
